Burnet girls basketball loses district game to Lampasas

The Burnet High School girls basketball team lost to Lampasas 44-22 Jan. 10 to go to 1-1 in District 24-4A play.
“These are the highs and the lows of winning and losing,” head coach Rick Gates said. “We were really high after getting the Marble Falls win. This is part of it.”
The Lady Dawgs were forced to play without a key member, who exited the contest in the opening minute. As a result, Lampasas concentrated on limiting Burnet’s inside game and had an answer for what the Lady Dawgs wanted to do offensively,
“Lampasas decided to pack it in and double down,” Gates said. “They did a good job of stopping penetration. They doubled down when we got the ball to our posts.”
Burnet scored three total field goals during the contest: two 3-pointers and one 2-pointer and went 11 of 24 from the foul line, Sophomore guard Sydney Lough dropped in 10 points.
Defensively, however, the Lady Dawgs continued to play at a high level, Gates said.
“For the most part, other than a couple of lapses, the defense was pretty good,” he said.
After the game, the coach reminded his players of a truth; the district race wasn’t going to be decided after two games and requires members to play a round-robin schedule.
“They still have to come to us,” he said.
The Lady Dawgs will take a bye Friday, Jan. 13, and travel to Jarrell Tuesday, Jan. 17, in a double-header with the boys. The girls junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., varsity plays at 6:30 p.m. and the freshmen take the court at 7:30 p.m.
